Congress Confronts Govt Over‘Internationalising’ of Kashmir Issue

Sachin Pilot calls for a special session of parliament and an all-party meeting to discuss the Indo-Pak ceasefire and its aftermath

NEW DELHI — Strongly objecting to attempts at internationalising the Kashmir issue, the Congress on Sunday reiterated its demand for a special session of parliament to discuss “Operation Sindoor” and its fallout.

The party also said an all-party meeting should be convened with the prime minister in attendance. It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi drew a lot of opposition flak for skipping two all-party meetings immediately after the Pahalgam terror attack and after ‘Operation Sindoor.’

The party also congratulated and saluted the courage and bravery of our defence forces, who accurately targeted terror training camps in Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC office here, senior party leader and Congress Working Committee member, Sachin Pilot, referred to the announcement of a ceasefire by US President Donald Trump, before it was announced by India and Pakistan.

While asserting that Kashmir is a bilateral issue and no third-party mediation is acceptable, Pilot asked whether the government was willing to accept it. He was referring to statements from US officials that the two countries will be meeting at a neutral venue. “There are attempts to hyphenate India and Pakistan once again,” Pilot remarked.

He said the announcement and its content have raised several serious questions on which the government needs to clarify its position and stand. He also asked for the terms and conditions of the ceasefire that had been reached between India and Pakistan.

The senior Congress leader asked what the guarantee is that such attacks will not take place even after the ceasefire. He said the military and the political system in Pakistan do not seem to be on the same page. As such, they lack credibility, he said.

Pilot said questions propped up just hours after the ceasefire was announced, with Pakistan firing at Indian posts.

Pilot also referred to and reminded about the 1994 unanimous parliament resolution seeking to take back the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He said the time had come to reaffirm that unanimous resolution.

The CWC member said the government owes an explanation to the 140 crore people of the country and all political parties. He said all political parties had kept aside their political differences and wholeheartedly supported the government in dealing with the situation.

Pilot said the country deserves to know how President Trump announced the ceasefire immediately after his vice president stated that the Indo-Pak conflict was none of their business. He also referred to the granting of more than a billion dollars IMF loan to Pakistan just a day before.

The senior Congress leader said these developments have raised serious questions, which need to be answered.
