GURUGRAM — Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Haji Sohrab, contesting from Haryana’s Gurugram Lok Sabha seat, pledges to prioritise the establishment of a university in Mewat, a historically neglected region. Sohrab’s promise comes amidst a backdrop of enduring demands for educational infrastructure and widespread grievances over governmental neglect.

“My victory is certain, and upon winning the election, I will endeavour to establish a university in Mewat, addressing the longstanding aspiration of the people in the region,” he said addressing a recent meeting.  Mewat, predominantly inhabited by Meo Muslims, has grappled with underdevelopment and a lack of educational opportunities for decades.

Despite successive governments in Haryana, including Congress, INLD, and BJP, no concrete steps have been taken to fulfill the demand for a university in Mewat. However, Sohrab aims to leverage this issue during his election campaign, capitalising on the discontent among the populace.

Gurugram Lok Sabha constituency encompasses three assembly segments in the Mewat region, currently held by the Congress. Sohrab’s opponents include Congress candidate Raj Babbar and BJP’s Rao Inderjit Singh, both familiar with the persistent calls for a university in Mewat.

Sohrab delineates the pressing issues faced by Mewat, including water scarcity, electricity shortages, and agricultural challenges. Conversely, Gurugram city grapples with perennial problems of traffic congestion and waterlogging. Sohrab, hailing from a farming background and serving as a sarpanch, underscores his commitment to championing the cause of farmers.

“While I have been advocating for farmers’ rights on the streets, I will amplify these issues in Parliament upon my election victory,” he said. Regardless of the government formed at the Centre, Sohrab pledges to play a constructive role in addressing the grievances of his constituents.

He criticises the incumbent politicians for their apathy towards the region’s challenges, citing their absence during crises such as the Nuh riots and the prevailing water crisis. Sohrab promises to tackle issues like exorbitant electricity rates and the dearth of healthcare and education facilities in rural areas.

“The health and education systems in rural Gurugram have collapsed, necessitating urgent intervention beyond political affiliations,” Sohrab says vowing to prioritise revitalising these essential services and providing much-needed relief to the beleaguered residents.
