NEW DELHI – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani, named to be bestowed with the country’s top civilian award Bharat Ratna, deserves nothing but contempt, Tamil Nadu’s Chidambaram constituency MP and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, said on Sunday.

He said the highest civilian award is being conferred on a person who has pursued a political career filled with hate and crimes.

Throughout his political life, Advani has propagated the idea of majoritarian hate against minorities, media reports quoted Thirumavalavan as saying.

The lawmaker argued that Advani played a key role in strengthening Hindutva in Indian politics.

“Mr Advani brought down V.P. Singh’s government which recommended reservations for Hindu OBCs (Other Backward Classes) in India. He undertook Rath Yatra, which became a ‘Ratha yatra’ (yatra of blood) against Shudras of India. He was instrumental in the demolition of Babri Masjid and spreading hate against Muslims,” the VCK leader alleged in his statement.

Advani is responsible for sowing the seeds of all the problems and chaos faced by Indian society today, he said.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is giving a Bharat Ratna to a person who has achieved these records,” he said.

The hardcore Hindu politician who is infamous for his RSS-led anti-Muslim campaigns, had launched his Rath Yatra, on September 25, 1990, to build support for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya. In the aftermath, Babri Masjid was demolished and hundreds of Muslims were killed.
