NEW DELHI — Tension is brewing in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka as Hindu groups, including members of Shri Ram Sena, are persisting with their demand of a blanket ban on Muslim vendors from participating in the renowned ‘Shri Siddheshwar Transition Religious Fair.’ The fair, steeped in history with a legacy spanning over a century, is set to take place during Makar Sankranti starting January 14.
As preparations for the grand event are underway, Hindutva proponents proposed to submit a memorandum to BJP lawmaker Basanagouda Patil Yatnal seeking a ban on Muslim vendors, media reports reaching here said on Tuesday.
This demand follows a recent controversy in Dakshina Kannada, where the Beediwadi Business Shreyobhivriddhi Sangh accused the Kudupu Ananthapadmanabha temple administration of discriminating against Muslim vendors during the ‘Shashthi Mahotsav’ which commenced on December 14.
In a memorandum addressed to Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan, the union president, B.K. Imtiaz, said the temple officials were allegedly threatened by a group, resulting in the exclusion of Muslim traders from setting up stalls outside the temple. Imtiaz, representing the interests of the Muslim community, urged the district administration to intervene, stressing the need for inclusive participation and employment opportunities for poor Muslim businessmen.
The activists in Vijayapura are echoing similar sentiments, warning of protests if their demand to exclude Muslim shopkeepers is not met. The situation remains tense, with both sides standing firm on their respective positions. As the controversy unfolds, the district administration faces mounting pressure to address the concerns raised by various communities and ensure a peaceful and inclusive atmosphere during the fair.
