LUCKNOW – Swift intervention by a senior official of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) facilitated the release of seven Kashmiri dry fruit vendors here on Monday.
Syed Mehfuzurrahman Faizy, Vice President of APCR UP West Chapter, got the vendors released on furnishing a personal bond. The official also helped in the retrieval of their confiscated goods from the police.
The vendors were arrested on Sunday during an anti-encroachment drive at Samta Mulak Chauraha in Gomti Nagar area by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation. The area has been designated as a no-vending zone. A group of Kashmiri vendors had been selling dry fruits at the location for several years. During the municipal corporation’s drive, its officials arrested the vendors and seized their merchandise. Reportedly, there were some clashes between the vendors and the municipal officials.
Nadeem Faiq from APCR Delhi, while speaking to Clarion India, expressed his grief over the incident, calling it unfortunate and emphasizing that such events should not transpire. He urged those responsible for maintaining law and order to refrain from unwarranted harassment and recognize that there are avenues to hold them accountable.
The seven arrested individuals were identified as Faizan Mohammad, Yawar Ahmed, Waseem Ahmed, Ashiq Hussain, Rauf Nazeer, Amir Ahmed, and Idrees Ahmed. All of them are residents of Kulgam, Kashmir, and were detained under Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
