NEW DELHI — Unplanned and unannounced protests rocked many cities across the country on Friday over derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, made by the suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the party’s expelled Delhi media cell chief Naveen Kumar Jindal recently.

After Friday prayers, Muslims in large numbers gathered outside mosques and protested against BJP’s suspended spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her derogatory comments on the Prophet. Protesters shouted slogans against the BJP leaders while displayed placards denouncing the act of sacrilege committed by them.

Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid witnessed a huge protest as a large number of Muslims emerged from all corners of the Jama Masjid and stage a protest demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma and others responsible for spreading hate against the Muslim community.

The people gathered on the stairs, just outside the Jama Masjid, holding placards against the former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. “The situation is under control as adequate security arrangements are in place,” the Delhi Police later said.

“As the protest was done without any prior permission from the Delhi Police, a legal action will be initiated,” an official said.

Similar protests were held in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Deoband, Moradabad and Lucknow, Jharkhand’s Ranchi, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Ludhiana, Hyderabad and Jammu & Kashmir. The protests turned violent at places including Prayagraj as stone-pelting and lathicharge is reported.

A large number of women in Navi Mumbai descended on the road to protest against the controversial remarks by suspended BJP leaders. In Maharashtra’s Solapur also a large number of people held a protest against for the same reasons.
