Communal Clashes During a Shobhayatra in Bihar’s Siwan

NEW DELHI – The police have arrested 20 people in the Siwan district of Bihar after communal clashes broke out during Mahaviri Akhada Shobhayatra, a religious procession, was being taken out on Wednesday evening.

The communal violence in which 12 people, including some policemen, were injured took place in an area under the Barharia police station. During the clashes, a shop was also set on fire.

Briefing Clarion India about the incident, SHO Praveen Kumar confirmed communal clashes broke out while the Mahaveeri Akhada procession was passing by a mosque.

“Complaints were filed from both sides. 20 people were arrested from both sides,” Kumar informed.

During the clashes, stones were pelted from both sides. The situation is now peaceful. Police forces are deployed in the area, he said.

Some videos have surfaced on social media related to the incident. In one of the videos, a mob of armed people can be seen creating ruckus and raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan in front of the mosque. Mob is seen going on the rampage in the presence of a police force.

Another video shows an armed mob sporting saffron gamcha (towel) roaming around while properties are being burned and vandalised around them.

Yet another video shows a group of people in saffron cloth pelting stones and vandalising houses. In the video, someone is boasting that everyone’s house is being vandalised.

People on social media have demanded strict action against the rioters by citing these videos.

“What is happening all this under your rule Tejasvi Yadav. Give strict punishment to these saffron hooligans,” said Priyanaka Chowhan.
