NEW DELHI — A dead-drunk policeman smacked the face of a two-year-old girl and branded her with a burning cigarette more than 50 times on different spots of her body in Balod district of Chhattisgarh state on Thursday.

According to media reports, the accused, Avinash Rai, a cop posted at the Durg Security Centre in Seoni, took the infant to a room and locked it and then started branding her with a live cigarette. The girl’s mother rushed to her rescue but was beaten black and blue by the man in brown.

The policeman earlier stayed as a paying guest at the house of the parents of the victim whose father lives in Nagpur while he was posted at Balod district. He had lent some money to the family for which he had gone to the girl’s home to recover the loan.

Yashwant Jain, Member of National Commission For Protection of Child Rights, told mediapersons that Avinash was posted at Durg Security Centre. “He was posted in the Balod Security Centre before he was transferred to Durg. He used to visit Balod for loan recovery from the locals. The other day, he forced the kid to call him papa. He started abusing and branding the infant girl with a half-smoked cigarette for not doing so.”

The victim’s mother later took her daughter to the Balod Police station. A police complaint was filed against the accused under Sections 294, 323 and 324. The Chhattisgarh police have suspended the accused and he has been arrested.

“Such an act by cops is unpardonable. DGP M D Avasthi has released orders to suspend the accused policeman from service. Also, the accused has been arrested”, writes Chhattisgarh Police in Hindi on its official twitter handle.
