This comes a week after Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to repeal the CAA

NEW DELHI — The Tamil Nadu government has ordered withdrawing 5,570 cases filed against people who were part of different public protests including against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), farm laws and some local issues.
According to Indian Express, cases against journalists by the previous AIADMK regime have also been withdrawn. Of the 5,570 cases, 2,831 cases were filed against those who protested against farm laws, the newspaper reported.
The CAA had triggered country-wide peaceful protests in December 2019 which lasted for months. The police in several states filed cases and at many places protestors were even arrested for breach of law and order. Similarly, cases were filed against people who protested against the controversial farm laws.
Last week, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution urging the Centre to repeal the CAA. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the Act violated the secular credentials of the constitution.
On Tuesday, he informed the assembly while delivering a speech that his government will also release 700 life convicts on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai on Wednesday, September 15. The government will take steps to prematurely release the inmates as a gesture of goodwill and on humanitarian grounds, the report cited Stalin as saying in his address.
He added that his government is mulling a commission that will work for measures to strengthen the relationship between police and public.
