Islam Nadaf’s family alleges a delay in the FIR and raises questions over the investigation process

MADHUBANI —A case of alleged mob violence in Bihar’s Madhubani district has led to the death of a 66-year-old man, identified as Islam Nadaf, ten days after he was seriously injured in an attack reportedly linked to a local dispute. The May 12 incident occurred during a wedding event in Ludgama village under Benipatti police station area.

According to information provided by the police, the wedding function involved members of the Lohar community. It is alleged that a disagreement broke out after a family member of Islam Nadaf participated in celebrations, which led to an exchange of words between both sides. The situation reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Police said that during the initial clash, a young man sustained minor injuries after being attacked in what was described as self-defence. Following this, tensions increased and a group of people allegedly gathered and went to Islam Nadaf’s house, where violence is said to have taken place.

The family of the deceased has alleged that the mob damaged household property and assaulted family members, including women. They further claim that Islam Nadaf, was severely beaten during the incident and sustained critical injuries.

He was immediately taken to Benipatti government hospital, where he remained under treatment for several days. However, he died on 21 May while undergoing medical care.

Following his death, the situation in the area reportedly became tense. The family has accused the police of delaying action, claiming that their complaint was not registered promptly and that an FIR was filed only after the victim’s death.

However, the Station House Officer of Benipatti police station has rejected these allegations. The officer stated that the complaint was registered without delay and that legal action was initiated as soon as the matter came to light.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, treating the incident as a murder case. One accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while investigation into the role of other individuals is ongoing.

Authorities have not provided further details regarding additional arrests but confirmed that the matter is under active investigation.

The incident has raised concerns in the local area, with both sides presenting conflicting versions of events, while police continue efforts to establish the sequence of developments leading to the fatal assault.
