NEW DELHI – As the foundation of the Ram Temple was being laid in Ayodhya on the land where the Babri mosque once stood, the Congress has come out openly in support of the temple, raising many eyebrows.
Many Congress leaders, including party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath, expressed their happiness and support for the construction of the shrine.
The Congress’s stand in line with the Hindutva ideology has drawn a lot of outrage on social media. But one which angered many was a tweet by the Delhi Youth Congress. The tweet, which has been deleted, said that the foundation of the Ram temple has been laid by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who had opened the lock of the Babri Masjid. The tweet has a photo of Rajiv Gandhi, along with Sonia Gandhi, and called Rajiv Gandhi a ‘jannayak’ (people’s leader).
Talking to the mediapersons on Wednesday, former MP chief minister Kamal Nath also said that it was Rajiv Gandhi who paved the way for the construction of the Ram temple. He also said that Gandhi was talking about establishing Ram Rajya in 1989.
The All India Congress Sevadal even went on to say that the ribbon of the temple could be cut by anyone but the Hindu lion who opened the lock of Babri Masjid and declared it a temple is Rajiv Gandhi. The screenshot of this statement in Hindi was doing the rounds on Twitter but the tweet is now missing.

The tweet put out by the Delhi Youth Congress has attracted criticism on Twitter. Neitizens have questioned the secularism of the Congress and asked the Muslim leaders of the party to resign over this.
“I have no anger but only prayers for Muslims in Congress. They are doing what they think is right for country & community. It must hurt them deeply to see these visuals. May Almighty give you strength to fight for your voice and beliefs, be it inside or outside the party,” said journalist Aditya Menon.

Netizen Nabiya Khan mocked the party saying that the party did not get an invitation for the bhoomi poojan despite putting in so much effort for building the Ram temple.

Mehreen from Kashmir compared the helplessness of the Muslims to the Kashmiris.
“IMs (Indian Muslims) will now realise how it feels like to be betrayed again and again. They’ll realise how is it to have no one to speak for you. Probably they might regret their silence over KMs (Kashmiri Muslims) to prove their patriotism because no matter what they do, they won’t be considered patriots,” she tweeted.
