NEW DELHI — Cornering the Union government on its claim that normalcy prevailed in Kashmir, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha said Jammu and Kashmir should not be seen merely as a piece of land. “Real human beings live there and it should be seen with the human angle,” he said.

Participating in the debate on President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, in his usual way of storytelling and showing poetry prowess, Jha said the government’s claims of normalcy in Kashmir are not at all substantiated by the actual situation in the Valley.

“The reference to Article 370 was made (in the President’s speech). I have come with the documents to say that there is no normalcy in Kashmir,” he said, holding a book titled “A Dismantled State: The untold story of Kashmir after Article 370” authored by Kashmir Times Editor, Anuradha Bhasin.

Referring to the ground situation in the Valley he said, “Jammu and Kashmir should not be seen merely as a piece of land. Real human beings live there and it should be seen with the human angle”.

Jha castigated the government on its move to evict people from the so-called encroached land in Kashmir. “Houses of people are being bulldozed there,” he said.

The RJD MP further stated that the Union government should first try to win over the hearts of Kashmiris and then only they will be able to make their way to Kashmir.

“Even if you try hundreds of times, you won’t be able to win the heart of Kashmir until you win the hearts of the Kashmiri people,” he said.

Jha added that a sense of fear prevails in the country among minority citizens.

Finally, he ended his strong-worded speech by targeting the government on the intrusion of Chinese troops into Ladakh territory.

He also took a jibe at the mention of the ‘the year 2014’ in the President’s Address stating, “In the President’s speech, 2014 is mentioned 43 times. Even 1947 isn’t mentioned as much, the year we got freedom.”

He reminded the House that the President is the supreme commander of the military and it was not right that she does not know the situation at the Chinese border.

“There is a denial. For one neighbour the government shows red eye but at the same time for the other neighbour you remain quiet.”
