NEW DELHI – As the country is gearing to welcome a new President and Vice-President with a tribal woman likely to assume the top ceremonial position, questions are being raised about the representation of Muslims at the highest seats of power.

Filmmaker Pritish Nandy has tweeted asking the question whether Indian Muslim will ever become Prime Minister or the President.

Nandy raised the questions over the country’s inclusivity and diversity through his tweet. He stated that while a tribal woman is set to become the President of the country for the first time, will any Muslim become the prime minister or the President?” Nandi said in a tweet on July 17.

Citing examples of the US and the UK, Nandy wrote on his Twitter account that a woman of Indian origin is the Vice-President of America. An Indian-origin person is going to be the Prime Minister of Britain. But will a Muslim of Indian origin ever again become the Prime Minister or President of India? Can you make one out of every seven Indians ineligible for a high political office?’ he asked.
However, his comments raised many an eyebrow with Hindutva trolls reacting angrily.

It is worth mentioning here that while no Muslim has ever made it to the highest executive position in the country, there have been at least three Muslim presidents – Zakir Hussain (1967-1969) and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1974-1977) and APJ Abdul Kalam.
