MALDA – In a tragic incident in Malda district, an elderly Muslim vegetable seller was beaten to death following a dispute over a stall at the weekly market in Samshi. The assailants, two young men, have reportedly fled the scene, and the area is now tense. The police are actively investigating the case but have yet to make any arrests.
According to local sources, the deceased, identified as 75-year-old Muslim, was a resident of Debipur in the Ratwa police station area of Malda. On Thursday, a confrontation broke out between the victim and other vegetable vendors in the Samshi market, a busy weekly event that draws traders from various parts of the state. It is believed that during the altercation, two individuals, Ruhal and Khelatu, along with three others, attacked the elderly vendor, landing a blow to his chest that caused him to lose consciousness.
“He fell to the ground and was immediately rushed to Samshi Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” said a local eyewitness.
Following the incident, the victim’s family filed a formal complaint with the Samshi police station, naming the two accused men. However, both suspects remain at large. “The police have registered a case against the accused and are actively searching for them,” said a police spokesperson. “We are committed to bringing the culprits to justice.”
Tension has risen in the Ratwa area, particularly around the Samshi market, where the incident took place. Locals are apprehensive, and many are worried about the rising violence in the area. “The atmosphere is tense. We are afraid to step out, as such incidents are becoming too common,” a local resident shared.
At present, the West Bengal government has not announced any compensation for the family of the deceased. Local authorities continue to investigate the situation, while tensions remain high in the community.
