NEW DELHI – In an extraordinary act of humanity, a 27-year-old Muslim engineering student donated blood while observing the Ramadan fast for Sangeeta Ghosh, a Hindu woman battling a severe kidney condition. The incident, which unfolded at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in West Bengal’s Kalyani city earlier this month, has become a symbol of hope in a time of deepening communal divisions.

Sangeeta Ghosh, from Majdiya in Nadia district, has been struggling with kidney disease for eight years. On 16 March, her health took a critical turn, and doctors urgently required blood donors. Her son, Sanju Ghosh, frantically reached out to Emergency Blood Service, a local volunteer group, for help. Naseem Malita, a regular donor, answered the call without hesitation.

“I was fasting when I heard about her condition,” Naseem told Clarion India over the phone. “But saving a life comes first. I rushed to the hospital and donated blood.”

For Naseem, this was no grand gesture — just another act in his years of helping others. “I’ve donated blood many times. It’s not a big deal; it’s my passion,” he said.

The Ghosh family was moved by his selflessness. “We were desperate — the blood bank had no stock,” said Sanju. “Naseem didn’t hesitate. He came immediately with his friends. To me, saving lives is the greatest religion.”

The story quickly spread online, drawing praise from politicians and citizens alike. Congress spokesperson Supriya Sarnate tweeted, “In this climate of hate, Naseem has shown the power of love. This is the India I believe in.” Naseem, humbled by the response, shared messages of support on Facebook, writing, “Helping others is the greatest service to God.”

A resident of Murshidabad now studying in Kalyani, Naseem hopes his actions inspire others. “We must break barriers when lives are at stake,” he said.
