NEW DELHI – Welfare Party of India on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the procedure adopted in the verification of citizenship under National Registration of Citizenship (NRC). Calling the updating process as “shoddy”, the party said it has pushed genuine citizens into an abyss of an uncertainty.

The Welfare Party alleged that the BJP Government at the Centre is using this exercise as a “political tool”.

Party’s national president Dr SQR Ilyas said that the mammoth exercise involving more than 1,100 crore rupees did not bring out a flawless list as the entire process of NRC in the Assam state was marred by allegations of bias and injustice.

About 3,11,21,004 crore people made it to the final list of the NRC, 19,06,657 lakh were left out from the list. Those who are left out are asked to appeal within 120 days in the Foreigner’s Tribunal and if rejected there, they can go for further appeal at the high court and Supreme Court. He called this entire procedure cumbersome and taxing for the poor.

He pointed out that many genuine citizens were left out despite producing genuine documents and in many cases members of the same family found their names missing in the final list and said inclusion of documentation in the final list was prejudiced.

He blamed the BJP Government for using NRC as a tool to polarise people and instill fear in minorities and destroy the delicate social fabric of the state of Assam. He expressed deep concern over the future of the people who are rendered stateless, whose deputation is neither feasible nor a desirable option.

If similar exercise is carried out in other states, Dr Ilyas said will also be as shoddy as the one conducted in Assam. It will involve huge sums of money and leave many genuine citizens stateless in the detention centres.

He further expressed concern over the introduction of Citizenship Amendment Bill which is anti constitutional and anti-Muslims and will make NRC more discriminatory and communal.
