Waqf Registration on UMEED Portal: Muslims Welcome Three-Month Breather

Date:

Portal users continue to suffer technical glitches and operational challenges

LUCKNOW — Muslims across the country have welcomed the government’s decision to provide three-month breather for Waqf registration on UMEED portal, a move that comes as a relief to property owners struggling to register their sacred Waqf lands. The extension addresses long-standing concerns over technical issues, server downtime, and administrative delays, which had prevented many from completing the registration process.

Until now, reports indicate that nearly 70 percent of Waqf properties had not been registered, leaving many property owners worried about legal recognition of their land. The Sunni Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh owns approximately 1.26 billion acres of land, yet only about 45,574 properties are registered. The Shia Waqf Board possesses 15,386 properties, with only 2,909 having been successfully registered.

Muslim clerics and community leaders had repeatedly requested the government to provide additional time for registration, citing persistent difficulties with the UMEED portal. Long queues and overcrowding outside registration centres were reported, especially on the original deadline day.

Speaking from the Sunni Waqf Board office in Lucknow, property owner Imran Qureshi expressed his relief: “The government has done a great job by providing a three-month reprieve. Now, we will be able to easily upload our lands on the UMEED portal. We have been working day and night to get our properties registered.”

Others also highlighted technical obstacles: “The server was down several times during the day, forcing people to wait late into the night to complete registration. This extension will ensure that no one misses the chance to register their property,” said Shazia Ansari, another property owner.

The UMEED portal, introduced to streamline Waqf property registration and enhance transparency, faced operational challenges that frustrated many property owners. The government’s decision reflects responsiveness to the needs of the Muslim community, ensuring that sacred lands are legally recognised and protected.

Officials have urged property owners to complete the registration process during the extended period. “This extension provides an opportunity to address pending registrations and ensure Waqf properties are documented properly. We encourage all property holders to take advantage of this additional time,” said a government spokesperson.

The move has been widely appreciated by religious scholars and community organisations, who see it as a positive step towards preserving Muslim heritage and legal rights over Waqf properties. “This decision will allow thousands of Muslims to secure their properties officially. It is a relief for our community and shows that the government is attentive to our concerns,” said Maulana Saifullah, a senior cleric in Lucknow.

With the three-month breather, it is expected that registration rates across Uttar Pradesh and other states will significantly improve, strengthening the legal recognition and protection of Waqf properties.
