NEW DELHI — A video has gone viral showing Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi jumping a barricade to protect her party worker who was facing the batons of the police on Saturday when they were on way to meet the Hathras family.

The video clip shared by a journalist on Twitter shows policemen backing away as Gandhi jumps down amid the melee.

As the video clip surfaced online, it was quickly shared by hundreds of people who lauded the courage of the Congress leader.

Earlier in the day, reports said that the UP government had decided to allow the Congress delegation to visit Hathras. The decision to give a go-ahead came after the delegation was stopped near Noida.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as well as Priyanka had on Thursday attempted to go to Hathras but they were stopped and allegedly roughed up and detained by the police. The police also registered a case against them for violating prohibitory orders.

Protests have erupted in various parts of India with people demanding resignation of UP CM Yogi Adityanath saying that crimes against women had shot up under his rule.
