New Delhi— The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has condemned the use of force by police on protesters against controversial citizenship law and NRC in Uttar Pradesh and other states.

The bipartisan federal government agency, which monitors, analyzes, and reports on threats to religious freedom, has called on the Narendra Modi government to stop police action on protesters.

“USCIRF condemns religious violence in UP and across India; calls on #Modi govt officials & law enforcement to stop use of force on those exercising right to express concern about #CAB #CAA and expansion of #NRC,” the agency said Tuesday.

In the last one week of protests and CAA and NRC, at least 16 people have been killed in Uttar Pradesh, 5 in Assam and 2 in Karnataka.

Reports coming from UP, which is currently ruled by Modi’s party BJP, are very disturbing. Thousands of people have been booked for taking out the protests while hundreds have been arrested. Victims have told media that cops barged into Muslim homes and shops, looted and vandalized the properties. In several videos, cops were seen damaging cars and bikes.
