NEW DELHI – A Muslim man from Uttar Pradesh’s Domarya Ganj alleged that a gang of men on April 6 forcefully encroached upon a patch of land that he owned. What is intriguing him is that the authorities are not coming to his aide despite repeated pleas.

Vipul, a social media activist, shared a series of video clips showing Mohammad Islam in torn shirt crying in desperation while recounting his ordeal. He could not recover from the trauma of being meted out with a raw deal. According to Vipul, on April 9, a gang of men erected an idol on Islam’s land. When Islam resisted the foul play, they assaulted him and left him badly bruised. He said the attack on him was part of a conspiracy.

Islam told Vipul that the police though filed a case in the matter, they invoked minor sections to weaken his case. He said had the police taken action in time, Islam would not have been assaulted. The case filed under a non-cognizable report using sections 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.

“Is this only the non-cognizable offence?” Vipul asked when the victim had complained of fear of violence and threat to his life.

In his complaint to the police, Islam had forewarned that his life was in danger and that the gang was resorting to vengeance which could affect the communal harmony in the area.

Vipual said role of a BJP leader and former MLA, Raghavendra Singh, cannot be ruled out in the land grab issue and assault on Islam. Singh was recently in the news for making hate speeches against Muslim during election campaign. He fought and lost election to Saiyeda Khatoon of the Samajwadi Party.

Singh had said in his speech that the Hindus who would vote for non-BJP parties have Muslim blood in their veins. He had warned that if voted to power again, he would make Muslims stop wearing skullcaps and start wearing tilak. At another instance, he had said that “miyan terrorism” had decreased since he became MLA. Miyan is an Urdu word for mister but it has attained a pejorative colour in India’s Islamophobic lexicon.
