NEW DELHI – A 13-year-old Muslim boy was attacked with knife by a gang of Hindu youths in Bareilly’s Garhi Chowki in Muravpura area on Thursday.

Reportedly the Hindu youths raised derogatory slogans during the attack on Mahtab while the victim was out to fetch some snacks near his school.

An FIR has been filed at the Garhi Police Chowki against the unnamed youths, media reports reaching here on Friday said.

Mahtab’s mother, Nasreen, has alleged inaction by the police and the school authorities in this regard.

“At around 5.30 p.m., my son had gone out to fetch some snacks when some boys accosted him and took him into an alley behind Alakhnath. They then beat up Mahtab and attacked him with a knife. Mahtab suffered severe injuries behind his neck. Somehow my son was able to get away from the scene. The reason behind the attack is because of all that Hindu-Muslim matter,” Nasreen was quoted as saying.

Nasreen also claimed that the police have booked the assaulters under minor offences even though the attack was life-threatening.

“When he (Mahtab) came to us, he was completely drenched in blood. He was in a terrible condition. The police have not taken any action yet,” she said.

Mahtab is currently being treated in Bareilly District Hospital where his condition was described as satisfactory.
