After bulldozer action on Madni Masjid last year, police have tightened security for the Eid-Al-Azha celebrations
NEW DELHI/KUSHINAGAR — As the festival of Eid-Al-Azha approaches, Kushinagar Police in Uttar Pradesh have increased security across the district, especially around Madni Masjid in Hata Nagar. The move comes months after the mosque made headlines due to a controversial demolition drive.
On 9 February 2024, parts of the Madni Masjid were demolished by the district administration, claiming they were built illegally. Since then, the area has been sensitive, and authorities are now working to ensure there is no disturbance during the feast of sacrifice on Saturday (7 June).
“We want the festival to be celebrated peacefully,” said a senior police officer. “There should be no room for misunderstanding or unrest.”
Police are holding peace committee meetings in every police station. These meetings include religious leaders and local residents, and focus on maintaining brotherhood during the festival.
“We are urging people to cooperate with each other and support peaceful celebrations,” the officer added.
Security has been stepped up in and around Madni Masjid. A large number of police officers, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), are patrolling markets, squares and main roads. Senior officers are visiting sensitive areas regularly to review the arrangements.
“We are keeping an eye on every possible point of concern,” said Kushinagar Superintendent of Police (SP). “Our officers are patrolling on foot to build public confidence.”
The administration is also closely monitoring social media to prevent the spread of rumours. Anyone trying to disturb communal harmony will face strict action.
“Social media posts are being watched carefully. If someone spreads false information or tries to cause tension, we will take action immediately,” the SP said.
Drone cameras and CCTV are being used to keep a close watch on the situation. Police presence has also been increased in busy areas, as markets are seeing a large number of shoppers ahead of the festival.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given strict instructions to the police administration to maintain peace during Eid. Following these orders, SP Kushinagar is personally visiting different areas and giving necessary instructions to police teams.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) has also been directed to inspect various areas regularly. Circle officers have been told to patrol with local police teams and report any unusual activity.
The district administration hopes these steps will help everyone celebrate Eid-Al-Azha with peace and joy.
“Let’s celebrate Eid with unity and love,” said a local after attending a peace committee meeting. “This is a time of happiness, and we must all do our part to keep the peace.”
