Darul Uloom Deoband stresses the importance of focusing on religious and academic studies; management warns of strict penalties for violations
NEW DELHI/DEOBAND — The management of the renowned Darul Uloom Deoband has officially banned the use of smartphones by all students within the madrasa premises. The decision comes as part of efforts to safeguard students’ focus on their religious and academic education.
According to an announcement from the madrasa’s hostel in-charge, Mufti Ashraf Abbas, students found with a multimedia Android phone during routine checks will face disciplinary action. The madrasa administration emphasised that smartphones are a major distraction and obstacle to the students’ educational progress.
Darul Uloom Deoband has historically kept its students away from distractions and external influences, prioritising deep religious knowledge and study. The latest move reinforces this long-standing policy by removing access to devices that could disrupt students’ commitment to learning.
Reacting to the ban, prominent Deobandi scholar Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora praised the decision, calling it necessary for preserving the sacred environment of study. “The aim of Darul Uloom is that children studying here develop a stronger bond with their books and dedicate maximum time to religious and educational pursuits,” he said.
Maulana Gora appealed to students and their families to fully respect and obey this directive. “It is vital for all to cooperate so the educational atmosphere, for which Deoband Madrasa is widely respected, can be maintained,” he said.
This move highlights the madrasa’s commitment to ensuring that students remain free from distractions like smartphones, which many argue have harmful effects on concentration and moral discipline. By taking this step, Darul Uloom Deoband aims to protect the quality and seriousness of education imparted to its students in these challenging times.
