NEW DELHI – Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has come under severe criticism after he used derogatory terms like ‘Kathmullah’ while slamming the Samajwadi Party leaders for advocating the education of Urdu.
“The character of the socialists has become dual. They will educate their children in English schools and will ask others to teach their children in Urdu. They want to make him a Maulvi, they want to take the country on the path of ‘Kathmullahpan’. This can’t be allowed,” said Adityanath in the assembly. On Tuesday, the chief minister even posted the video of the controversial statement on social media platforms.
The derogatory term ‘Kathmullah’ is anti-Muslim trope often used by Islamophobes to spread hate against the minority community.
The controversial statement has come under fire from the opposition parties including former chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
Responding to Adityanath’s statement, Yadav said “Becoming both a ‘Maulana’ and ‘Yogi’ are good. But becoming a bad Yogi is not good. If we talk about education, Samajwadi Party distributed laptops during its term. I bet, that you can find 100-200 laptops in the ward where CM lives. We never stop education; we are the people who distribute laptops”.
Ajai Rai, president of Uttar Pradesh Congress, has condemned the use of derogatory term in the assembly by the chief minister describing it “insult to the constitution”.
“They want to make a Maulvi, they want to make ‘Kathmullah…”. The Chief Minister is using such language inside the House. It is highly reprehensible for a person holding a constitutional post to use such language. This is a direct insult to the Constitution. Think! Where is the country heading? What kind of society are we creating?,” said Rai.
Lok Sabha MP and Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad also slammed Adityanath for using “insulting, communal and unconstitutional” term calling it “shameful”.
“The use of derogatory, communal and unconstitutional words like ‘Kathumllapan’ by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the sacred temple of democracy, the Vidhan Sabha, is not only shameful but also exposes his mindset that he is doing politics of division instead of uniting the society. This statement is not only an insult to a particular community but also to the secular spirit, democratic decorum and values of the Constitution of the entire India,” he said.
Azad reminded Adityanath that the country has been founded on the legacies of all kind of leaders including Muslims.
Chief Minister @myogiadityanath Ji, remember! This country is the legacy of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Bharat Ratna Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Kanshiram ji and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Dr. Faridi ji. The Constitution will rule here, not communal frenzy and arrogance of power. The public is watching everything and will give a befitting reply when the time comes!,” said Nagina MP.
Uttar Pradesh Congress has also taken social media to shame the chief minister for not keeping the regard of the assembly.
“Does it befit a Chief Minister to use such indecent words like ‘Kathmullahpan’? The use of such unconstitutional, unparliamentary language inside the House shows that you neither know how to respect the Constitution, nor do you have any regard for the language and the dignity of the House. Shame on you, Chief Minister,” stated Congress.
