UP: Blasphemous Post on Prophet Causes Tension in Mathura; Vinay Pandit Arrested

Widespread anger among Muslims; protesters demand strict punishment for hurting religious sentiments

MATHURA/NEW DELHI – Tension gripped the Uttar Pradesh city of Mathura on Monday after an objectionable comment against Prophet Muhammad was posted on social media by a man identified as Vinay Pandit. The offensive post, which spread rapidly online, triggered anger among Muslims who staged a strong protest demanding immediate and strict action against the culprit.

The incident comes close on the heels of a similar controversy in Bokaro, Jharkhand, where another individual had made derogatory remarks against the Prophet. Before the furore in Bokaro died down, this fresh provocation in Mathura has deepened the community’s anguish.

A large number of Muslims gathered outside the police station in Mathura, expressing their outrage. Witnesses described the atmosphere as tense yet determined. One protester said, “We cannot tolerate anyone insulting our beloved Prophet. The authorities must act firmly to stop such repeated insults.”

According to police officials, Vinay Pandit was arrested soon after the incident was reported. “We have registered a case under the relevant sections and the investigation will be carried out in a fair and transparent manner,” a senior police officer confirmed.

Initially, when people felt the police were slow to act, frustration mounted, leading to an escalation of the protest. But once news of the arrest was shared, the crowds began to disperse. Officers assured community members that the law would take its course and the guilty would face punishment.

To prevent any disturbance, heavy security arrangements were made across sensitive areas of the city. Police also urged people to maintain peace.

Muslim leaders, however, stressed that mere arrest is not enough. “This is not the first time such an insult has happened. Strict punishment must be given to set an example, otherwise these provocations will continue,” said another protester.

The administration, while appealing for calm, reiterated its stand. “No one will be spared if they try to hurt religious sentiments. Action will be taken against all culprits,” police officials said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over repeated attempts by mischief-makers to provoke communal unrest through objectionable posts online. Local Muslims expressed relief at the prompt arrest but underlined the need for decisive action to prevent such cases in the future.
