UP Authorities Enforce Loudspeaker Regulations in Four Major Districts

Officials remove loudspeakers exceeding decibel limits from mosques and temples in Firozabad, Muzaffarnagar, Azamgarh, and Sant Kabir Nagar

NEW DELHI/AZAMGARH — Uttar Pradesh has seen a series of administrative actions targeting loudspeakers across four districts—Firozabad, Muzaffarnagar, Azamgarh, and Sant Kabir Nagar. These measures, aimed at controlling noise pollution, involved the removal of several loudspeakers from several mosques, as authorities reminded citizens to adhere to court-mandated guidelines.

In Azamgarh, the Senior Superintendent of Police directed officials to inspect and regulate loudspeakers in all police station areas. “We have observed that some places were not following the permitted standards,” said a district administration official. “Our aim is not to target any religion, but to ensure that the use of loudspeakers is within the legally allowed limits.”

As part of the initiative, the administration issued clear instructions that loudspeakers in residential areas must not exceed 45 decibels at night and 55 decibels during the day. Both Muslim and Hindu religious leaders expressed support for the campaign. Imam Abdul Wahid from Azamgarh stated, “We fully cooperate with the authorities. Our intention is not to disturb anyone, and we are committed to using loudspeakers responsibly.”

Firozabad also witnessed active enforcement, particularly in the Ramgarh area. SP City Ravi Shankar Prasad confirmed, “Eight loudspeakers were removed in this area to prevent noise pollution. We also informed local communities about court guidelines to ensure awareness and compliance.”

The campaign extended to Muzaffarnagar, where 15 loudspeakers were removed from mosques and other religious sites. City Superintendent of Police Siddharth K Mishra said, “This is part of a wider campaign directed by the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh. Our focus is on places where loudspeakers exceed permissible limits.”

In Sant Kabir Nagar, authorities inspected and removed loudspeakers from both temples and mosques operating above the prescribed decibel limits. A senior police official commented, “We want to ensure public comfort while respecting religious practices. It is important to strike a balance between daily life and faith-based activities.”

Meanwhile, in Shamli district, police registered a case against Maulana Rafiq Khan for allegedly using a mosque loudspeaker above the allowed decibel limit. Local residents had lodged complaints about excessive noise, prompting police action. Maulana Khan clarified, “Our intention has always been to call people to prayer peacefully. We are willing to cooperate fully and ensure compliance with the regulations.”

These actions have sparked discussions on balancing religious freedom with public peace. Residents and community leaders have generally welcomed the administration’s efforts. Ayesha Khan, a resident of Azamgarh, said, “We understand the need for limits. Muslims here want to perform their religious practices without disturbing others.”

The Uttar Pradesh police and administration have repeatedly urged all religious leaders to adhere strictly to the guidelines, ensuring the use of loudspeakers remains within permitted limits. The campaign reflects a broader effort to maintain harmony, uphold the law, and respect religious practices simultaneously.

“Noise should not disturb daily life,” SP Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasised. “We are working with all communities to ensure a fair approach.”

The campaign across the four districts highlights the careful approach of the administration—enforcing rules without targeting any particular faith. By involving Muslim leaders and educating communities about permissible decibel limits, authorities aim to enable Indian Muslims, along with other religious groups, to practise their faith peacefully while respecting the law and public comfort.
