UNSC to Hold Emergency Meeting Amid Global Outrage Over Israel’s Massacre in Rafah

Date:

Israel has killed at least 36,050 Palestinians — including babies, children, and women — and wounded 81,026 in its 235-day war on Gaza, while some 10,000+ people are feared buried under the debris of bombed homes.

The UN Security Council has convened an emergency meeting after what Israel said was a “precision strike” on a displaced persons camp in the southern Gaza city of Rafah that killed at least 45 people, wounded 250, some of them burned alive and others slashed into pieces.

The closed-door meeting was requested by Algeria, which is currently a non-permanent member of the council, diplomats said.

UN chief condemns Israel strike in Rafah, calls for ‘horror’ to end

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has condemned an Israeli strike on Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, saying the attack “killed scores of innocent civilians who were only seeking shelter from this deadly conflict.”

“There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop,” Guterres added in a social media post.

Saudi Arabia Strongly Condemns Israeli Attack on Displaced Palestinians in Rafah

The Saudi Foreign Ministry strongly condemned on Monday the ongoing “massacres by Israeli forces and their continued targeting of innocent civilians in Gaza, the latest of which was the attack on displaced Palestinians” in northwestern Rafah.

It stressed the Kingdom’s “categorical rejection of the continued flagrant violations by Israeli forces of all international and humanitarian resolutions, laws and norms.”

It called on the international community to “intervene immediately to stop the massacres and prevent the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe from deepening.”

Israel’s attack on Rafah was ‘intentional’: US Congresswoman

Israel’s bombing over the weekend of a camp for displaced people in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza was “intentional,” the only Palestinian American member of the US Congress said.

“This was intentional. You don’t accidentally kill massive amounts of children and their families over and over again and get to say, ‘It was a mistake’,” Rashida Tlaib said on X.

“Genocidal maniac Netanyahu told us he wants to ethically cleanse Palestinians. When are you going to believe him @POTUS?” she added, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
