NEW DELHI — All Opposition Members of Parliament on Monday boycotted the JPC meeting on the Waqf Amendment Bill, calming that the committee is not functioning according to the principles and norms of the JPC. They alleged that the committee is ethically and principally wrong.

Opposition MPs, such as Gaurav Gogoi and Imran Masood of the Congress, A Raja of the DMK, Arvind Sawant of the Shiv Sena (UBT), AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party’s Mohibbullah and Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stormed out of the meeting and expressed strong sentiments against its proceedings.

Some Opposition MPs charged that personal allegations were allowed to be levelled against senior opposition members like Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge by a person who was deposing before the committee.

Alleging that the Committee is biased, they have sought time from the Speaker to discuss the issue. As per media reports, the Opposition members have alleged that a presentation on the bill by Anwar Manippadi was not about the bill and was used to malign the Karnataka government and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

The opposition MPs have written to the Speaker of Parliament seeking  that the Committee chairman be removed.

“We are boycotting the meeting because the Committee is not functioning with the principles and norms… In terms of ethics and principle, they are wrong,” Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant said.

Jagdambika Pal, senior BJP MP is currently heading the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
