BENGALURU – Renowned UK-based professor, Nitasha Kaul, found herself at the center of a diplomatic goof up as she was reportedly denied entry into India, despite receiving an invitation from the Karnataka government. Kaul, a Kashmiri Pandit, was on her way to attend literary events in the Karnataka capital when the incident occurred, stirring debates about academic freedom and diplomatic protocols.

Kaul, a professor at the University of Westminster, was invited by the Karnataka government to attend the literary events in the state. However, upon her arrival at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, she was denied entry and sent back to the UK. She claimed she was not assigned any reason whatsoever.

According to sources close to Kaul, her denial of entry into India is believed to be linked to her outspoken views on Kashmir. Kaul, known for her critical stance on India’s policies in Kashmir, has been vocal about human rights violations in the region. The denial of entry has raised questions about whether academic dissent is being stifled and whether the Indian government is selectively targeting individuals based on their political views.

The incident has garnered widespread attention, with many expressing solidarity with Kaul and condemning the treatment meted out to her. Activists and intellectuals have criticised the Indian government’s actions, labeling them as an assault on academic freedom and freedom of speech.

Kaul took to social media expressing her disappointment and frustration. She emphasised the need for open dialogue and exchange of ideas, regardless of ideological differences. Kaul’s supporters have launched a campaign demanding response from the Indian government and calling for greater transparency in immigration policies.

The Karnataka government, on the other hand, has distanced itself from the controversy, stating that it had extended a formal invitation to Kaul for the literary events in the state. However, the government has not commented on the reasons behind her deportation, leaving many unanswered questions.

Analysts argue that Kaul’s case underscores broader concerns about shrinking space for dissent in India. They point to a pattern of targeting individuals critical of the government, both domestically and internationally. The incident also highlights the challenges faced by academics and intellectuals who engage in sensitive political issues, particularly those related to Kashmir.

Kaul’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, underscoring the importance of protecting academic freedom and safeguarding the rights of individuals to express their opinions without fear of reprisal.
