NEW DELHI – Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been trolled after she said in a interview that her father sang in a mosque and she is aware of Islam.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey, whose last interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry went viral the world over, Priyanka Chopra Jonas said.

“My dad used to sing in a mosque, I was aware of Islam,” Priyanka Chopra Jonas said.

The comment has been receiving many brickbats with many trolling Priyanka for claiming she understood Islam because of her father singing in mosques.

Fans of Chopra, however, argued that trolls were misrepresenting Chopra’s words. This was her full quote.

“With the swirling number of religions that we have, that live within the country as well. I grew up in a convent school. I was aware of Christianity. My dad used to sing in a mosque, I was aware of Islam. I grew up in a Hindu family, I was aware of that.

Spirituality is such a large part of India that you really cannot ignore it,” she said.

Many argued that singing was not allowed inside mosques and that Chopra must have confused a mosque with a dargah.

During the course of the interview, Chopra also opened up about her spiritual incline. “Spirituality is such a large part of India that you cannot ignore it but also my family believed in having higher power, having a sense of faith. My dad used to tell me that religion is a way to get to the Supreme power. Every religion has a different face to the same direction where we are going. I am a Hindu, I have a temple in my home and I pray as often as I can but at the same time, I am a believer of the fact that a higher power does exist and I like to have faith in that,” she said.
