‘Tum Terrorist Ho’: Neighbours Step in as Bengaluru Couple Abuses Muslim Resident

Date:

An apology follows as several individuals stepped in, objecting to the language used and reminding the couple that India is a diverse nation where people of different faiths coexist

BENGALURU — A video from Karnataka’s capital city Bengaluru that went viral on Friday shows residents intervening after a couple allegedly hurled communal slurs at a Muslim resident of a housing compound. The exchange has sparked debate online over bias and accountability.

The video shows the couple, identified in social media posts as a former army officer and his wife, accosting the man and using Islamophobic slurs, including “terrorist” and “Pakistani.” Other residents objected to the language and reminded the couple that people of different faiths coexist in India.

According to a post by X user @raviprakash_rtv, the remarks triggered immediate backlash from others present. In the video, one resident is heard saying, “Tum terrorist ho, kaun bolta hai?” (“Who says you’re a terrorist?”) as the argument escalates. The situation de-escalated after objections from neighbours, with the couple eventually issuing an apology.

Several individuals stepped in, objecting to the language used and reminding the couple that India is a diverse nation where people of different faiths coexist.

In the video, one resident is heard strongly defending the targeted individual and confronting the couple, at one point saying, “Tum terrorist ho kaun bolta hai” as the argument escalates. The situation appeared to calm down only after sustained objections, with the former army officer and his wife eventually issuing an apology.

The footage quickly went viral, prompting a wave of reactions across social media platforms. One user commented, “Indian Government spent crores and this year allocated ₹41,007 crore to Jammu and Kashmir and did they stop Pahalgam attacks and how much Pak spent on their people they have to send army to Saudi to defend against IRAN and yet keep fighting here.”

Another wrote, “True. Hope this applies other way as well. Coz if the opposite would have happened and anyone would have questioned. U media people would have called as minority and they will be shown as victims.”

A third user said, “Good to see that India is filled with educated youth.”

A fourth added, “Govt officials think they are above the law. I know several who use their clout to give trouble to different communities of humans & to the community dogs as well,”

Yet another comment read, “No place for hate in Congress-ruled Karnataka. Locals peacefully reminded an elderly couple that India belongs to every religion. Apology followed. Dialogue triumphs over division! Proud of our secular ethos.”
