A local politician asked the police administration to take action against the attackers and warned the authorities that if the police failed to take action, the Muslims of Adilabad would stage protests
NEW DELHI — A mob thrashed a Muslim truck driver ferrying bovine animals at a cow ranch in a village in Adilabad district of Telangana in South India in the presence of the police on Tuesday night, local media reports said.
A video clip available on YouTube shows the driver recalling the attack. “They beat me a lot. They were 10-12 people.” says the victim driver who has been identified as Ahmad, a resident of Jainoor. “I can identify them. They beat me in the presence of the police.”
According to reports, one person named Aryan informed the police that a truck going from Jainoor town to the Armoor area was carrying bovines. The police swung into action and seized the truck and filed the case against the owner of the truck. Later, they took the truck to a village cow ranch. There, Aryan, along with his supporters, attacked and thrashed Ahmad. He was badly injured in the attack and taken to hospital.
Mohammad Farooq Ahmad, a local Muslim politician, said that he spoke with the DSP of the area and asked the police to take swift action against the mob who attacked the driver. He said that the attackers are affiliated with right-wing groups like the BJP and the RSS.
“They beat him so badly that his nasal bone got fractured,” he said and accused the police of dereliction of duty which resulted in the mob attack on the driver. “The police inaction is emboldening the communal elements in this area. If they had taken immediate action, this innocent man would not have been harmed.”
He asked the police administration to take action against Aryan and his gang and warned the authorities that if the police failed to take action, the Muslims of Adilabad would stage protests.
Mob violence in the name of cow has seen a rise in India in the last few years with members of the ruling BJP using communal rhetoric to incite violence against beef consumption. Earlier, one the eve of Eid, a truck driver was thrashed and injured in Gurugram near Delhi by a mob “for transporting meat.”
