NEW DELHI — Extending his congratulations to the citizens of the country on Independence Day, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani said this is not the freedom that our elders dreamed of and for which they sacrificed their lives.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Maulana Madani mentioned the sacrifices of his great ancestors for the freedom of the motherland and said that not only freedom but also any history of the country cannot be completed without mentioning the great Ulamas (scholars) of India. “The freedom movement of India was started by scholars and Muslims; the people here were made to feel the bad consequences of slavery when no one was even thinking about it. The first revolt against the British in India was raised by scholars. Our scholars had gathered the courage to fight for independence when other nations were dreaming,” he said.

Maulana Madani reminded those who are deliberately ignoring the real history of the country that it was our ancestors who revolted against the oppressive British rulers, who established a government-in-exile in Kabul, and a Hindu king Mahendra Pratap Singh was made the president of this government.  “Our forefathers were in favour of freeing this country from the clutches of slavery on the basis of unity and humanity regardless of religion. They were well aware of the fact that this dream could not have been fulfilled without bringing Hindus and Muslims together,” he said.

The Jamiat chief said that later when Sheikh ul Hind (Maulana Mahmud Hasan) came out of Malta jail, he emphasised that the country’s independence mission cannot be accomplished by the efforts of Muslims alone, but if the country has to be taken out of the clutches of the British, the freedom movement should be made a Hindu-Muslim movement.

“He had also said that if fortunately the Sikh, a warrior nation also comes along, then the path to freedom of the homeland will become even easier. This saying of Sheikh ul Hind is preserved in the books.”

Maulana Madani said that our forefathers moved ahead on the path of Hindu-Muslim unity and freed the country from the slavery of the British. “Unfortunately, the country became independent, and was also divided and this division became the cause of destruction, and this was not for any particular nation but for Hindus and Muslims all,” he said.

Maulana Madani said the freedom fighters did not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims and brought everyone together on the basis of humanity and succeeded in their goal. He expressed deep regret that the community which first stood for the independence of the country is now called the enemy of the country. He said our elders made supreme sacrifices for the country’s freedom. How can our children become enemies of the country today, he asked.

He said that those who do the politics of hate are distorting history. “These are the people who want to run the country not on the basis of peace and unity and humanity, but on the basis of hatred. Poverty, chaos, unrest, unemployment indicate that the politics they have adopted are going to lead the country towards destruction,” Maulana Madani said.

“This country is ours, so if something happens, our heart aches the most and the reason for this is that our elders have made the most sacrifices for this country. We say these things openly because this is the real history,” he said.

Maulana Madani said that we belong to a family whose people had faced hardships for the freedom of the country, and even went to jail. Today, those who question our patriotism should tell us what their people did for the freedom of the country. What do you know about freedom? You have only spread hatred, he said.

“We have given sacrifices, we have gone to prisons. The main question is what you have done for the freedom of the country? We have done a lot for freedom, so we know what freedom is. If any sectarian points a finger at us today, he is crazy, demented, and insane. He does not know what kind of voices have been raised for the freedom of the country,” he said.

Maulana Madani concluded his statement by saying: “Earlier we have sacrificed for the freedom of the country, and now we have to sacrifice for the protection of this freedom.”
