Tension Grips UP’s Kashi After Hindu Groups Protest Azaan on Loudspeakers

Muslim leaders urge both sides to maintain peace and ask the administration to ensure equal treatment

VARANASI – The Hindu holy city of Kashi in Uttar Pradesh, known for its centuries-old heritage and religious harmony, is now witnessing unrest after a loudspeaker dispute escalated into a communal flashpoint. The trouble began when police restricted the use of loudspeakers at a temple where a priest was reciting Hanuman Chalisa at high volume.

According to police officials, the action was taken following a complaint that two Muslim youths were harassed near the temple premises. A video of the incident, captured on CCTV, confirmed the allegations. The police then arrested two individuals allegedly involved in the harassment.

However, the arrests triggered strong reaction from Hindu groups, who staged large-scale demonstrations across the city. They accused the administration of bias and warned that if Muslims were allowed to use loudspeakers for azaan (Muslim call to prayers), they would respond by amplifying the Hanuman Chalisa in every temple.

One protester shouted, “If they can use loudspeakers for azaan, why can’t we recite Hanuman Chalisa? This is our right.” The protestors carried saffron flags and gathered in large numbers, blocking roads and chanting slogans against the district administration.

In contrast, members of the Muslim community expressed deep concern over the growing hostility. “We have lived peacefully in Kashi for generations. We don’t want conflict, but harassment of our boys cannot be tolerated,” said Mohammad Arif, a local shopkeeper.

Muslim leaders urged both sides to maintain peace and asked the administration to ensure equal treatment. “No religion teaches hatred. If one community feels attacked, others should show restraint, not anger,” said Maulana Rashid, a local cleric.

Police officials stated that the situation is under control but admitted to heightened tension. Additional security forces have been deployed around sensitive areas. “We appeal to all residents to stay calm. Law will take its course,” said a senior officer from the Varanasi Police.

The controversy comes amid a wider debate in Uttar Pradesh over religious slogans and posters. Recently, the circulation of banners reading “I Love Muhammad” and “I Love Mahadev” sparked heated exchanges on social media, further fuelling religious polarisation.

Political analysts warn that such disputes could disturb the city’s delicate communal balance. “Kashi has always been a symbol of India’s unity in diversity. Turning it into a battleground for religious supremacy damages the very soul of the city,” said journalist and social commentator Imran Khan.

Residents fear that outsiders and fringe groups are exploiting religious sentiments for political gain. “This is not about faith. It’s about creating division,” said a local Hindu teacher, requesting anonymity. “Our Hindu and Muslim neighbours have lived together for years without any such issues.”

As the administration monitors the situation, many in Kashi are calling for dialogue and restraint. The city, revered by both Hindus and Muslims, stands at a crossroads—between its tradition of coexistence and the rising tide of intolerance.

“Faith should unite, not divide,” said an elderly resident of Godowlia. “Kashi belongs to everyone who prays here—no matter how they pray.”
