Minor disputes over flags and music cause unrest; police act promptly and are investigating

KUSHINAGAR – A dispute over the display of religious flags during a Muharram procession in Kushinagar District of Uttar Pradesh took a violent turn, resulting in stone-pelting and injury to an 8-year-old boy named Akhlaq.

The incidents raised concerns over communal harmony in the area.

A peaceful Muharram procession in the Gulharia village, under Khadda police station in the district, saw some objections from locals. They claimed that a few youths raised religious flags near a temple and shouted slogans. However, the claim has not yet been substantiated.

“A few people tried to create trouble, but police reached on time and brought the situation under control,” said Inspector Anil Kumar from the Khadda police station. “We have taken some people into custody and are checking facts. There is no need to worry.”

Most of the people in the procession were observing the Muharram rituals peacefully.

In a separate incident in Tekuatar market, under Ramkola police station, a dispute over music played on a DJ led to a clash between members of two communities. During the commotion, 8-year-old Akhlaq was hit on the head and injured.

“Akhlaq is being treated at the hospital. His condition is stable,” said a local doctor. “We are giving him the care he needs.”

Eyewitnesses say the situation started over a small misunderstanding but quickly turned violent. Members of the Muslim community say they were attacked by people linked to Hindu groups.

“This procession has always happened peacefully,” said Mohammad Irfan, a resident. “We request everyone not to believe in rumours or share videos that can create problems.”

Leaders from both Hindu and Muslim communities are calling for calm and asking people not to spread hate.

“We must not let a few people break the peace we have shared for years,” said Sunil Mishra, a shopkeeper from Ramkola. “This is our town, and we all must live together.”

The police administration has increased force in sensitive areas and is watching social media closely to stop false news and videos from spreading.

“Our officers are working around the clock,” said SP Vinay Kumar Singh. “No one will be allowed to disturb the peace. We are investigating all the claims.”

Muharram is a time of deep mourning and reflection for Muslims. Many across India observe it peacefully, remembering the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and promoting messages of unity and patience. In many parts of Uttar Pradesh, this spirit of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb — a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity — continues to shine.

Despite these troubling incidents, the overall mood remains calm, and efforts are being made to keep peace and harmony in the district.
