HYDERABAD — Telangana Unity Day celebrations began across the state on Friday on the eve of September 17, which marks accession of erstwhile Hyderabad State to the Indian Union. The occasion is also being celebrated as the National Integration Day by Asaduddin Owaisi, Hyderabad MP and chief of AIMIM.

Rallies were taken out in all Assembly constituencies in the state, kicking off the year-long official celebrations announced by the state government to mark the golden jubilee celebrations, reports IANS.

Ministers, MPs, state legislators and other public representatives addressed the rallies, emphasising the need for unity.

Holding national flags, thousands of students, youth and women participated in the rallies at constituency headquarters. This marked the beginning of three-day celebrations. Various programmes will be organised during the three days.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will unfurl the national flag at the main ceremony to be held on Saturday in Hyderabad. Ministers will hoist the national flag at district headquarters.

It was on September 17, 1948 that then princely State of Hyderabad acceded to Indian Union, 13 months after India gained independence.

The accession followed Operation Polo launched by the Indian Army after then Nizam of Hyderabad had refused to join the Indian Union in 40000 Muslims were reportedly killed.

National Integration Day

Asadduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlise Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad began the National Integration Day celebrations with a bike rally from Masjid-e Abubakar in Chandryangutta ahead of the 75th anniversary of the erstwhile state’s merger with India. The bike rally led by Owaisi culminated in Tegalkunta, Old City.

On the occasion Owaisi asked leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to see the multifaceted nature of the region’s history rather than ‘creating feud’ among Hindus and Muslims based on a simplistic narrative of ‘AIMIM-Nizam-Razakaar’.

“Razakaars were quite violent to Hindus. Nobody can deny that. Its a part of history. Also, Doras were cruel to Dalits in villages. Sunderlal report findings say that 40000 Muslims were killed during Operation Polo. If I read to you, two paragraphs from that report, everyone of us will go home sobbing. I don’t want to do that to you on the day we are celebrating Hyderabad’s integration into India. I want to remind you that there were Hindus who saved Muslims by gaurding them in their houses. This is the example I want to remind you today,” Owaisi said.

According to reports, Owaisi also said that AIMIM and Muslims of the Deccan are not looking for loyalty certificates from RSS-BJP and they can throw them in the dustbin. “People who have not spent a single drop of sweat during the independence movement are now celebrating liberation day,” he remarked.
