HYDERABAD – Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), one of the country’s influential Islamic organisations, on Wednesday announced seat-wise support for candidates belonging to different political parties in the ensuing Telangana Assembly polls.Â
The premier Muslim body has extended support to 41 running candidates of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), 69 of the Congress, and seven from the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and one each of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) in the vote that is set for November 30.
The organisation’s Telangana unit put out a list of all the 119 assembly constituencies and the corresponding party that it extends support to, in any particular constituency,
A few weeks ago, sources said, the Jamaat formed a committee to understand the political situation and sentiment across Telangana. The organisation has had internal meetings to discuss the promises that the ruling BRS made ahead of previous elections, and to what extent they were kept, policy formulation and implementation since the formation of the Telangana state in 2014.
In Hyderabad’s Goshamahal constituency from where Hindutva protagonist T. Raja Singh is contesting on Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ticket, the Jamaat has decided to back BRS candidate Nanda Kishore Vyas Bilal.
In the city’s prestigious Jubilee Hills constituency, the Jamaat has extended support to former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin. The BRS has renominated incumbent MLA Maganti Gopinath while the BJP candidate is Lankala Deepak Kumar. What has made this battle a tricky one is that the AIMIM, a BRS ally, has fielded Mohammed Rashed Farazuddin who is a municipal corporator with a lot of pull in the Shaikpet division of the constituency.
