NEW DELHI — Delhi Police on Thursday granted a gun licence to former BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma, who raked up a huge controversy after her blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The license, given to her after she claimed to have received death threats, allows her to carry a personal gun.
A Delhi police official acknowledged that Sharma had applied for a gun licence as she has been receiving a death threat, media reports said.
During a TV debate last year, her insulting comments on Prophet Muhammad had led to wide spread protests and violence at places across India. The BJP later suspended her from the post of party spokesperson.
Her controversial remarks on the Prophet (pbuh) even invited backlash from Muslim countries.
Protests also broke out in several parts of the country and multiple FIRs were registered against her.
The violence amid protests in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur injured 40 people, including 20 police personnel. Violent protests also erupted in several other parts of the country.
Cases were registered against Nupur Sharma for hurting religious sentiments in Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, West Bengal and Mumbai. The suspended BJP leader had also approached the Supreme Court to club all the pending FIRs against her.
The apex court, however, refused to grant her relief and slammed her over her televised remarks, saying that she was single-handedly responsible for the unrest in the country. She later filed another petition saying that after the SC’s criticism of her comments, she has been facing rape and death threats.
