NEW DELHI – Help has started to pour in for Saira Bibi, wife of Mazloom Ansari, the cattle trader lynched to death in Jharkhand’s Latehar district after the Caravan Daily reported the plight of the family.
On May 15, Caravan Daily published the news story – Family of Mob Lynching Victim Mazloom Ansari Struggles Survival, which highlighted the austere condition of Saira who now has to single-handedly take care of her 8-member family with little or no source of income. Ansari was the sole bread earner of the family.
“Three years down the line, life has become difficult for Mazloom Ansari’s surviving family members. Ansari was the sole breadwinner of the family and is survived by four daughters, one son and his wife. His in-laws (wife’s parents) were also completely dependent on Ansari. With the sole earner gone and no source of income, the family is being forced to lead a life of austerity and hardship,” highlighted the story.
At the bottom of the story, the Caravan also has given its email id for those who were interested in helping the family. A large number of good Samaritans sent in emails, expressing their desire to help the family, while many asked for the contact numbers and bank account details of the family.
“This refers to your report on Family of Mob Lynching Victim Mazloom Ansari Struggles for Survival. Kindly send me details to send (in) contribution,” reads one of the emails sent by one of our readers.
“I have read the article in Caravan Daily regarding their condition and would like to offer some immediate and some monthly help to the family. Kindly share their details like mobile number, address, account details etc. Also, request you to keep my identity hidden,” said another reader in his email.
‘Caravan Daily’ contacted Saira to confirm whether she had received any support so far. She replied that she had got multiple calls, asking about her situation and other personal details. She also said that some people also came to visit her family and supported her financially. However, she had not checked her bank account. When she was informed about the financial help, she said that she will have her bank details checked by visiting her bank.
Ansari was lynched by cow vigilantes in Jharkhand’s Latehar district in March 2016 when he along with Imtiaz Khan was going to a cattle fair to sell off their cattle. They were hanged from the tree after being lynched to death. Their killing had become a national issue for the entire country. It was also the first lynching case that Jharkhand had witnessed.
