‘Stumped’: Syed Kirmani Releases Autobiography on His 75th Birthday

NEW DELHI – Legendary former Indian wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani achieved a milestone by launching his much-anticipated autobiography on his 75th birthday. The book ‘Stumped: Life Behind and Beyond the Twenty-Two Yards’ was unveiled at the weekend (December 29) at a glittering ceremony in Karnataka’s capital city of Bengaluru.

Besides family members and friends, a galaxy of former cricketers descended at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for the book launch. Renowned cricketers Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Brijesh Patel, Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and many of Kirmani’s state teammates.

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar were also in attendance, reports reaching here said.

Kirmani, widely regarded as one of India’s finest wicketkeepers, shared anecdotes and memories that shaped his illustrious career during the event. Speaking at the launch, he said, “This book is a reflection of my journey, both on and off the field. It’s a tribute to the game that gave me everything and to the people who stood by me through thick and thin.”

The autobiography traces Kirmani’s journey from his early days in Bengaluru to becoming a stalwart of Indian cricket. It covers his pivotal role in India’s historic 1983 World Cup triumph, where his sharp wicketkeeping and crucial partnerships played a vital part in the team’s success. The book also delves into lesser-known aspects of his life, including his challenges, personal sacrifices, and his transition from a cricketer to a mentor and commentator.

Kapil Dev, captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, lauded Kirmani as a “true team player” and praised his remarkable consistency behind the stumps.

Fans and enthusiasts eagerly anticipated “Behind the Stumps” for its candid portrayal of Kirmani’s cricketing journey. The book resonates not only with cricket fans but also with anyone inspired by stories of determination, resilience, and excellence.

As Syed Kirmani turns 75, the autobiography stands as a testament to a life dedicated to cricket and a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
