NEW DELHI–The installation of a statue of Rani Lakshmibai at the historically significant Eidgah Park in Delhi has commenced, following the Delhi High Court’s rejection of a petition against the project. The move, which has sparked rumours and concerns on social media, led to heightened security, with police and paramilitary forces deployed in the area to maintain order.
As word spread across social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp, about potential protests against the statue installation near Eidgah Park, a large crowd gathered near the site. However, local authorities dispersed the gathering and warned the public not to trust ‘misinformation’ being circulated online.
The police emphasised that security measures were in place to prevent any disruption and urged the public to refrain from participating in unnecessary demonstrations.
The statue of Rani Lakshmibai,aFreedom Fighter, is being relocated from the Jhandewaala Temple intersection to a new site near Eidgah Park, following a decision by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The statue’s original placement became untenable after the removal of the intersection, necessitating its transfer to a new location. This decision led to several petitions filed by some residents and local groups, challenging the move due to the park’s proximity to the Eidgah, a site of religious importance for Muslims.
However, the Delhi High Court dismissed the petitions with strong remarks, stating that the Eidgah management has no legal grounds to object to construction near the park. The court affirmed that the DDA’s decision to relocate the statue was lawful and did not infringe upon the management’s rights. The court also criticised the petitioners for what it described as “laziness” in opposing a decision that, in the court’s view, had no valid legal basis.
In light of the court’s ruling, the statue installation proceeded, though the atmosphere remains tense, with a significant police presence ensuring security in the vicinity. Friday prayers at the Eidgah were conducted under strict arrangements, with officers stationed nearby to prevent any unrest.
The relocation of the statue has been opposed with some expressing concerns over its proximity to the Eidgah. Others view it as a necessary part of city planning. The Delhi Development Authority has maintained that the move is a practical solution following the redesign of the Jhandewala intersection, and the installation will be completed in due time, with continued security measures to ensure peace.
