Allahabad High Court grants bail to the legislator, his son Jaim, and wife Seema in connection with the 2024 suicide case of a 14-year-old maid at their residence
NEW DELHI/BHADOHI — The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Zahid Beg, his son Jaim Beg, and wife Seema Beg in the case of the death of a 14-year-old minor maid. The case had led to the arrest and imprisonment of the MLA and his son, while his wife remained on the run for several months.
The incident took place on 9 September 2024, when a 14-year-old girl, working as a domestic help at the MLA’s residence in Bhadohi, allegedly died by suicide. Five days later, on 14 September, the police registered a case against Zahid Beg, his wife and son on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Hardatt Pandey. The family was accused of employing the minor and pushing her to take her own life.
According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, the police first arrested Jaim Beg, while Zahid Beg surrendered in court later. His wife, Seema Beg, went missing soon after the case was filed.
In November, the police took strong action against her for avoiding arrest. On 18 November 2024, following an order from the district court, the police sealed her property. She had also filed a petition for anticipatory bail in the high court.
Now, in a major relief for the family, the Allahabad High Court has ordered their release on bail. The decision was made by Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of a single bench.
“The investigation into the suicide is still going on. At this stage, it is not right to keep the accused in jail,” said the judge during the hearing.
At present, Zahid Beg and his son are lodged in Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj. With this decision from the high court, they are expected to walk out of jail soon.
The court’s decision brings temporary relief to the SP leader’s family, though the case will continue to be investigated.
