LUCKNOW – The Election Commission has introduced special polling stations for women who wear burqas. Termed “Pardanasheen Polling Stations,” these booths are being set up in urban assembly constituencies, with a focus on areas with significant minority populations, to ensure that women who choose to vote wearing burqas face no obstacles in exercising their democratic rights.
The initiative marks the first time such dedicated polling stations have been established. These polling stations will be staffed exclusively by female officials.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Additional Municipal Commissioner Lalit Kumar said: “The aim is to ensure that women do not face any inconvenience or discrimination while casting their votes. To this end, all screening and verification processes will be conducted by female polling personnel. Entry of men within the designated areas is strictly prohibited.”
The move has been widely welcomed by civil society groups and women’s rights advocates, who view it as a positive step towards fostering greater inclusivity and accessibility in the electoral process. By creating a safe and supportive environment for burqa-clad women to vote, the Election Commission is not only upholding the principles of democracy but also sending a strong message of equality and respect for religious diversity.
In addition to the establishment of Pardanasheen Polling Stations, efforts are underway to enhance the overall voting experience for citizens across urban areas. The Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the District Election Commission, is working to prepare model booths in 110 wards, with a focus on providing essential facilities and amenities.
