NEW DELHI – Although popular television news channel NDTV has denied the rumour that Adani Group was planning to take over its control, social media continues to speculate about the fate of anchors like Ravish Kumar and Srinivasan Jain. On Monday, the rumour saw NDTV shares climb up 10%. The media company, majority owned by Radhika and Prannoy Roy, said in a statement that “NDTV Limited is not in discussions now, nor has been, with any entity for a change in ownership or a divestment of any sort.”

The rumour of Adani Group buying NDTV got further credence after it announced the appointment of Sanjay Pugalia as CEO and editor-in-chief to head the group’s media initiative. Pugalia recently resigned from the editorial directorship of the Quint Digital Media.

Pugalia has in the past held senior positions in several prominent media houses such as CNBC-Awaaz and Zee News. He was the one who had set up Star News in Hindi. He was also part of the founding team of AajTak, the leading Hindi channel belonging to India Today group. Pugalia’s latest move gave rise to speculation that the Adani group was looking to acquire a Delhi-based media house, probably NDTV.

On his appointment, Adani Group released a statement: “We look forward to leveraging Sanjay’s wide-ranging experience in media, communications and branding across the Adani Group’s diverse range of businesses and in our Nation Building initiatives.”

Adani group is owned by Gautam Adani who is considered very close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Social media users started talking about the fate of NDTV, its credibility and the future of its anchors who are known for taking anti-establishment positions.

A Twitterati said that Ravish Kumar would be jobless if Adani buys the NDTV.

Another Twitter user said that Kumar may start his YouTube channel like other anchors Ajit Anjum if he loses job because of Adani buying the channel.

Some people also speculated on the fate NDTV Owner Prannoy Roy.

A user said that Srinivasan Jain may also be asked to quit along with Ravish Kumar.
