NEW DELHI – Six people were killed in police firing during protests against the new Citizenship law and NRC in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, NDTV quoted the state police as admitting. Two persons were shot dead in Meerut during the protests which emerged from mosques after the Friday congregation and prayers.

Reports said stone-pelting and clashes between police and protesters took place in Lisari Gate area. Protests were also reported from Bahraich area. Violence erupted in Bulandshahr, a town in western UP, amid protests post the Friday prayers. A vehicle was set ablaze.

Protests were held in several parts of Uttar Pradesh after the Friday prayers despite imposition of a ban on assembly. District authorities in various UP towns had ordered an internet shutdown, anticipating mass protests. Visuals doing the rounds on social media showed slippers and shoes lying scattered on roads outside a mosque after police chased away protesters.

Reports said violence erupted during protests in Bijnor, Meerut Kanpur, Sambhal, Firozabad and Muzzafarnagar towns as also other places.

Several hundred people were arrested from across the state during a crackdown by cops. By evening social media was abuzz with gory visuals of blood-splattered roads after police baton-charged protesters on Delhi Gate-Darya Ganj stretch in Old Delhi.

Police told the media that around 6:30pm, they used water cannons on protesters after incidents of stone-pelting. Several people were detained during the protests.

Police had erected barricades on all roads around Jama Masjid and used megaphones to urge people end the protests. Internet remained suspended in the area and police kept a close watch on the situation via CCTV cameras. The protest march progressed in a peaceful manner.

Protests erupted after the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid, India’s central mosque in Old Delhi area Friday afternoon. Soon after the Jumma Namaz was over, Chandra Shekar Azad, leader of the Bhim Army, emerged from among the sea of worshipers and shouted slogans against the new law. The people in thousands responded to the chants in unison. He carried a copy of the Constitution and a poster of its framer, BR Ambedkar, in his hand.

According to some media reports, Azad dramatically dodged the police despite the elaborate restrictions. Police swiftly launched a search operation to detain him.

Since last week, protests ran across India against the new law, demanding that the government revoke it.  Delhi police had denied Azad permission to hold a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar area, citing law and order as a reason.
