DHAKA – Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has left the Dhaka palace reportedly for a “safer place, as per sources said to be close to the leader. This move comes amid escalating unrest and mounting pressure on her administration.

A senior advisor to Sheikh Hasina said that the resignation of the embattled leader was a “possibility” after being questioned about the likelihood of her stepping down, reported Indian Express.

“The situation is such that this is a possibility, but I don’t know how it will happen,” the aide said on condition of anonymity.

Bangladesh PM’s Son Urges Security Forces to Block ‘Any Unelected Government’

As hundreds of thousands of protesters demand her resignation, Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has urged the country’s security forces to prevent any takeover from her rule. “Your duty is to keep our people safe and our country safe and to uphold the constitution,” US-based Joy said in a Facebook post.

“It means don’t allow any unelected government to come in power for one minute, it is your duty,” he emphasized.

Joy, who also serves as an information and communications technology advisor to his mother, warned that the progress made by Bangladesh could be jeopardized if she were forced out of office. “Everything of our development and progress will vanish. Bangladesh would not be able to come back from there,” he cautioned. “I don’t want that and you also do not want that. Myself, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, will not let that happen as long as I can.”

Military’s Role in the Crisis

Amid these tensions, Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, is set to address the nation, according to a military spokesman who spoke to AFP without providing further details. The rallies, which began last month against civil service job quotas, have escalated into some of the most severe unrest of Hasina’s 15-year tenure and have evolved into broader calls for her resignation.

The current situation has echoes of past political turmoil in Bangladesh. In January 2007, the military declared an emergency after widespread unrest and installed a caretaker government for two years.

As the nation waits for further developments, the uncertainty surrounding Sheikh Hasina’s leadership continues to grow. The world watches closely as Bangladesh navigates this critical juncture in its political history.
