NEW DELHI — The Delhi University unit of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest on Thursday outside Gate Number 4 of the campus, demanding the immediate withdrawal of a university circular that reportedly directs colleges to gather and submit personal details of students from Jammu and Kashmir.
SFI members denounced the move as discriminatory, accusing the administration of unfairly singling out students from a specific region. Protesters warned that such a directive amounted to profiling and risked deepening the sense of alienation faced by Kashmiri students on campus.
A delegation — including SFI DU Convenor Sohan Yadav, DU ICC representative Mehina, and Zakir Husain Delhi College student Amit — met with the University Proctor to formally raise their objections. They described the circular as a violation of students’ rights and an affront to the principles of equality and inclusion in academic institutions.
Speaking to the media, Yadav stated, “At a time when national unity is essential, targeting students from Jammu and Kashmir sends a divisive message. The university should promote inclusivity and trust, not suspicion.”
The SFI called for the immediate revocation of the circular and urged the student body to stand in solidarity with Kashmiri peers. The group reiterated that educational spaces must remain safe and inclusive for all students, regardless of their regional backgrounds.
According to PTI report, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and revoke a controversial circular issued by Delhi University, which has directed its departments and affiliated colleges to collect detailed personal information from students hailing from Jammu and Kashmir.
As of now, Delhi University has not issued an official response to the protest or the concerns raised.
