Septuagenarians from Aligarh Defy Age Stereotypes to Pursue Higher Education

NEW DELHI — In a testament to the enduring thirst for knowledge, two septuagenarians from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh have defied societal norms by appearing in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) examination. Despite being at an age where many would opt for a quiet retired life, Mohan Lal and Virender Kumar Sharman showcased their unwavering commitment to education.

Mohan Lal, a retired senior government official with a background in mathematics, decided to embark on a new academic journey by appearing in the NEET exam to pursue a degree in medicine. Reflecting on his motivation, Mohan Lal said he wanted to be a social worker and serve society as a doctor.” His determination to continue learning and contribute to society serves as an inspiration to many.

Similarly, Virender Kumar Sharman expressed his desire to pursue a career in medicine after passing the exam. “One should not wait for death after retirement. If I don’t pass NEET this time, I will prepare more and continue to live life to the fullest,” he said.

Despite facing challenges in their academic pursuits, both candidates remained undeterred. Mohan Lal and Virender Kumar Sharman, who hail from Neehar Meera National Senior Secondary School in Aligarh’s Kyampur locality, demonstrated resilience by passing the exam on their second attempt.

The NEET exam, held at 18 centres in Aligarh, saw participation from individuals across different age groups. Aimed at assessing candidates for admission to various undergraduate medical courses, the exam is renowned for its rigorous evaluation process. Mohan Lal and Virender Kumar Sharman’s success serves as a testament to their dedication and perseverance.

Sharman provided insight into their determination. “We both retired from our respective professions but were determined to pursue higher education,” he said. Despite initial confusion due to their senior status, they remained focused on their goal of academic achievement.

The success of the two aged individuals serves as a reminder that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s dreams. Their story inspires individuals to defy societal expectations and pursue their passions relentlessly. As they continue their educational journey, they have set an example of courage, determination, and the belief that it’s never too late to learn.
