KOLKATA — Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed died on Sunday due to a heart attack. Known affectionately as ‘Lal Da,’ Ahmed served as the elected representative of Kaliganj in Nadia district, where he was a respected figure both in politics and as a social worker. His death has left a deep sense of grief within the party, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leading tributes to the late leader.

The 70-year-old Ahmed, a senior Muslim leader within the TMC, was taken to the hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated on Saturday night. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Ahmed passed away in the early hours of Sunday. His death has sent shockwaves through his constituents, colleagues, and supporters across the state.

Mamata Banerjee took to social media to express her heartfelt condolences. In a post on ‘X’, she wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of my colleague, Nasiruddin Ahmed (Lal), the MLA from Kaliganj, Nadia. He was not only a dedicated political representative but also a respected lawyer and social worker.”

Banerjee described Ahmed as an “experienced public worker” and acknowledged his strong connection to the people of Kaliganj. “He was a very good social worker and I have great respect for him,” she added.

The chief minister also took to Instagram to further express her sorrow, highlighting that Nasiruddin Ahmed’s death had left a significant void. “Nasiruddin was one of our closest friends, a man who cared deeply for the people. His contributions will never be forgotten.”

Known for his commitment to the welfare of his community, Nasiruddin Ahmed’s journey in politics began when the TMC came to power in 2011. He was first elected as an MLA from Kaliganj, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the area. Despite a setback in the 2016 assembly elections, where he lost to the Congress-CPI(M) alliance candidate Sheikh Hasanuzzaman, his return to TMC in 2021 saw him reclaim his seat in Kaliganj.

Ahmed was widely known as ‘Lal Da’ in his constituency, a nickname that symbolised his friendly and approachable nature. His political legacy was one of trust and dedication to public service, with many regarding him as a leader who understood the concerns of the common people.

Nasiruddin Ahmed’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief from political leaders across the state. The TMC has issued official statements condoling the loss, praising his unwavering commitment to the party and his role in shaping the local political landscape. Local leaders, along with the residents of Kaliganj, have expressed their sadness, remembering the late MLA for his kindness and service.

TMC colleagues have described him as an instrumental figure in the party’s rise in Nadia, especially in the context of its efforts to expand its influence across the state. His transition from a member of the opposition alliance to a member of TMC is seen as a testament to his political acumen and his ability to unite people from various backgrounds.

Nasiruddin Ahmed’s family, friends, and followers have also expressed their grief at his untimely passing. “He was a father figure to us,” said one of his long-time supporters. “His dedication to improving the lives of people in our village and beyond will always be remembered.” The community has also paid tribute to Ahmed for his legal expertise, social activism, and commitment to uplift the underprivileged.

As West Bengal mourns the loss of a respected political leader, the future of the Kaliganj constituency remains uncertain. While Trinamool Congress remains steadfast in its support for Ahmed’s legacy, many are asking how his passing will affect the political balance in the region. With the next state elections looming, political analysts suggest that TMC will need to ensure that Ahmed’s spirit of service and dedication lives on through his successor.

For now, Mamata Banerjee’s words continue to echo as she stands in solidarity with Ahmed’s family and the people of Kaliganj. “My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and followers,” Banerjee wrote. “His loss is a great blow to all of us.”

The death of Nasiruddin Ahmed marks the end of a significant chapter in the political history of Kaliganj, but his memory as a dedicated social worker and a true friend of the people will undoubtedly persist in the hearts of those who knew him.
