NEW DELHI — The Delhi Police resorted to lathicharge and pushed the protesters and students back soon after they began their protest march against CAA, NRC and NPR from Jamia Millia Islamia university to Parliament House in New Delhi on Monday.
The scheduled peaceful protest march from Jamia Millia Islamia to Parliament House, called by Jamia Coordination Committee, was forcibly stopped by Delhi Police .
Despite the police barricade, the students remained adamant to move ahead with the march as it was peaceful and not unconstitutional.
The protesters though said, “It is our right to march to Parliament, we will continue the march ahead.”
The protesters raised slogans of “Aeen ke dum pe march karenge” (We will march with power from the Constitution).
After an hour long standoff between the security forces and the students, the police resorted to a lathicharge on the protesters near Holy Family hospital which is within walking distance of Jamia Millia Islamia.
Some security forces personnel resorted to the lathicharge while others pushed back the protesters when the protesters reportedly threw water pouches at the security forces.
However, security forces pushed the protesters back.
The march to Parliament began on Monday one hour late due to ongoing exams in the university. A heavy contingent of Police was deployed near Jamia university with tear gas and water cannons to stop the protesters near Holy Family Hospital.
Multi-layered barricades were also seen on the way to discourage and stop protesters.
Earlier, a similar march of Jamia students to Raj Ghat on January 30 had created controversy after a man raising pro-CAA slogans opened fire injuring a protesting student.
